Measurement of p24 antigen (a 24 kDa protein component of the HIV capsid) is used for the early detection of HIV1 infection. High levels of p24 are present in blood serum of recently infected individuals during the short period between infection and seroconversion.
SMAs were raised to three distinct regions of intact p24 (coded: R; G and B). All testing and ELISA pairing analysis has been undertaken using recombinant p24. The SMAs are cross reactive with recombinant p26, enabling detection of both HIV1 and HIV2 infections.
